Six Flags Holding Autism Day At Great Adventure
Lights and some music will be adjusted and other accommodations for sensory issues will be in place to make the day enjoyable.

JACKSON, NJ — Going to an amusement park with all of its whirring rides, flashing lights and screaming riders can be thrilling for most of us. For those with autism, however, the sights and sounds can be excruciatingly overwhelming.
On Thursday, May 3, Six Flags Great Adventure will be adjusting some of its lights and music as it hosts a sensory-friendly day where those on the autism spectrum, their families, friends and educators can enjoy the day together, according to the Six Flags website.
Autism Day at the park is being hosted by Custom Education Foundation and sponsored by the Gersh Academy, the website said. It also is a fundraising event.

For the day, there will be adjustments to lights and music (though both Six Flags and Custom Education noted that because it's an amusement park, eliminating all the noise isn't possible). There will be designated decompression areas areas with sensory-friendly items like iPads and bean bag chairs for those who need to take a break.
There also will be a number of vendors with information on support, resources and services available to families and those on the spectrum, and special presentations throughout the day from high-profile professionals in the field of autism.

In addition to Six Flags staff, some members of the special education staff from the Gersh Academy will be available throughout the park all day to assist families in whatever they may need.
*Please note that while every attempt has been made to create a sensory-friendly environment, due to the nature of the park some lights and sounds may still be present," Six Flags said on its website.
Because this is an exclusive event, complimentary tickets will not be accepted and Season Pass holders will need to purchase a ticket for admittance. The All Season Dining Pass will not be valid, but 2018 Sport Bottles will be accepted at participating locations.
