St. Dominic's Cooks Up A Special Thanksgiving

For 10 years, the families at the Catholic elementary school have been sharing a feast and activities with special needs students.

Third-graders at St. Dominic’s School in Brick had a chance to share a special feast Tuesday morning -- a Thanksgiving dinner with a group of special needs students from Monmouth County.

The students from Harbor School in Eatontown, a school for students ages 5 to 21 who have a variety of challenges, have been joining St. Dominic’s students for Thanksgiving for 10 years, according to Jen Luddy, a member of the St. Dominic School PTA.

After enjoying a traditional Thanksgiving meal and desert, the students mingle and work together on an activity, Leddy said, with the goal of teaching the children about community and service, as well as teaching them about the Thanksgiving holiday.

St. Dominic’s students even dress up as pilgrims and Native Americans, she said.

The parents of the third-graders prepare the food for the meal and leftovers are donated to a local food bank, she said.
