The Mustangs are held in check by the Chiefs in South Jersey Group V

The Brick Memorial football team’s season came to a halt Friday night in Marlton.

The fifith-seeded Mustangs (6-4) fell behind early and could never catch up, as Cherokee (6-3) beat Brick Memorial 45-28 in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group V playoffs, according to Shore Sports Network.

Brick Memorial got two touchdowns from Elie Lavarin, a 34-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Tim Santiago and a 42-yard run from Matt Cathey, but could not contain the fourth-seeded Chiefs’ offensive attack, Big plays hurt the Mustangs, with Jonathan Lovett scoring on an 85-yard kickoff return and a 76-yard run from scrimmage on offense.

Cherokee advanced to face eighth-seeded Toms River North, which knocked off top-seeded Lenape on Friday night.
