Traffic Shift Coming For Midstreams Bridge In Brick

The traffic will move to the new bridge so the old one can be demolished, county officials said.

BRICK, NJ — Northbound traffic on the original Midstreams Bridge is scheduled to be shifted onto the new Midstreams Bridge sometime Thursday afternoon, Ocean County officials announced.

The traffic shift will allow for the demolition of the remainder of the old bridge, officials said.

Access will remain limited to northbound traffic only, while the contractor Midlantic Construction of Barnegat Township, works on the bridge replacement.

The bridge replacement work is expected to be completed by February 2019, county officials said.

The existing Midstreams Bridge over Beaver Dam Creek was originally built in 1962. It was 131 feet long and 35 feet wide with precast concrete slab beams supported on concrete pile caps founded on timber piles with timber bulkheading. The replacement work began as the timber piles and timber bulkhead showed advanced deterioration and the concrete pile caps were beginning to crumble.

Once completed, the new bridge will be 111 feet long and 49 feet wide, with the single span structure consisting of adjacent precast/prestressed concrete box beams, supported on full height reinforced concrete abutments, founded on cast-in-place steel pipe piles and concrete footings.

The construction will include a 6-foot wide sidewalk on the west side with a 4-bar galvanized steel railing with cast-in-place concrete pylons. Included in the scope is the extensive installation of steel sheet bulkheading, revised roadway profile and upgraded guide rail.
