Need A Spare Tire? Don't Take It From Someone Else's Car, Brick Police Say

Three people were charged after two of them went searching a senior development for a tire matching their car, police said.

Three people who apparently needed a spare tire have been arrested after two of them stole a spare from a car in a Brick Township senior citizen development early Tuesday morning, police said.

Jasheir Powell, 20; Quadirah Booker, 22, and Toraya Evans, 20, all of Lakewood, were arrested early Tuesday morning on outstanding warrants, Brick Sgt. Neal Pedersen said, after police officers found them changing a tire in the parking lot of the Wawa on Brick Boulevard toward the southern end of town.

Brick police were called to Regent Court in Lions Head North about 3:15 a.m. for a report of a possible vehicle burglary, Pedersen said. As officers were taking the report, Officer Mark Catalina came across the trio changing the tire on a 2001 Hyundai Sonata, Pedersen said.

Investigation revealed that when the car’s tire went flat, Powell and Booker walked to Lions Head North and began searching for a vehicle similar to theirs. When they located a similar vehicle, they entered the trunk and removed the spare tire. They then returned to their vehicle and were installing the tire when they were encountered by Catalina, Pedersen said.

Powell and Booker were both charged with burglary and theft, he said. Powell also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest from Howell for $100 and Booker had an outstanding warrant for $500 from Brick, he said.

Evans, who stayed with the car at Wawa, was wanted on a $500 warrant from Wall Township and was arrested as well, Pedersen said.
