Two Charged, Car Seized In Brick Drug Arrest: Police

BRICK, NJ -- Two men who police say conducted a drug transaction near Sports Authority are facing drug charges, Brick police said Thursday.

Tyshon Naphier, 26, of Brick, and Marc Wish, 28, of Toms River, were arrested Tuesday afternoon, Sgt. Neal Pedersen said.

Pedersen said Sgt. Erik Olsen was patrolling the area of the Sports Authority in Brick Plaza about 5:15 p.m. when he observed what he believed to be a drug transaction. Olsen saw a black Honda Civic park next to a white Subaru Forrester and the occupant of the Honda got into the Subaru with a white plastic bag that he had retrieved from his trunk, Pedersen said.

Olsen then saw the Honda operator -- later identified as Naphier -- hand the bag to the driver of the Subaru, then he got out of the Subaru and drove off in the Honda, Pedersen said.

The Subaru left the scene at this point and disregarded a stop sign and a red traffic signal as it exited onto Cedar Bridge Avenue, Pedersen said. Olsen was able to pull the Subaru over at Brick Boulevard and University Court.

As Olsen was speaking with the driver, Wish, Olsen detected a strong odor of raw marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Further investigation led to the discovery of 2 ounces of marijuana in the white plastic bag and several burnt marijuana cigarettes, Pedersen said. Wish was arrested and taken to headquarters, he said.

While Olsen was tracking down Wish, other police units looked for the Honda being operated by Naphier but could not find it, Pedersen said.

About 6:10 p.m., two members of the police bicycle unit, Officers Eric Haugh and Jeffrey Person found the Honda being operated on Creek Road, in the Maple Leaf Park area, and pulled the car over, Pedersen said.

Naphier was driving the car at the time of the stop and the officers detected a strong odor of raw marijuana emanating from his vehicle, he said. Officer Daniel Fogerty responded to the scene with his K-9 partner and the investigation revealed two plastic bags of marijuana and more than $600 in cash. Naphier was subsequently arrested and transported to headquarters, Pedersen said.

Naphier’s Honda and the cash were seized pending forfeiture proceedings, he said.

Wish was charged with possession of CDS, possession of CDS paraphernalia, disregard of a stop sign, failure to stop for a red traffic signal and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, Pedersen said. He was processed on summonses and released, he said.

Naphier was charged with distribution of CDS, possession of CDS, possession of CDS paraphernalia and CDS in a motor vehicle, Pedersen said. Bail was set by Municipal Court Judge Robert Lepore at $25,000 no 10 percent option, he said. Naphier was able to post bail and was released, he said.
