WEATHER ALERT: Accidents, Icy Roads, Speed Restrictions Trouble New Jersey Commute

Speed restrictions are in place on the Garden State Parkway, Outerbridge Crossing; icy roads blamed for accidents, issues at Newark Airport.

The deep freeze around New Jersey overnight that resulted in delayed school openings across the state isn’t expected to budge today.

The National Weather Service is reporting temperatures in the teens across much of the state, with wind chills below zero as of 9 a.m. That has resulted in lingering ice on roads, accidents and speed restrictions on some highways.

Already:

  • Icy conditions also have created problems overhead, as NJ Transit is reporting that trains into and out of Penn Station are subject to 45-minute delays due to Amtrak overhead wire problems.
  • In Woodbridge, police say four drivers were stranded in their vehicles Tuesday morning in several inches of freezing water at Woodbridge Center Drive. Tow trucks were called to the area just off Route 1 to remove the vehicles, according to nj.com.
  • In Princeton, Quaker Road -- a main thoroughfare between Routes 1 and 206 -- has been shut down due to icy conditions, police said.
  • In Pennsylvania, a man was killed when a tree fell on his car, as a result of high wind and ground saturated from all the precipitation, police said.
  • The frigid weather was blamed for forcing the shutdown of NJ Transit’s light rail service on the Hudson Bergen line Monday night due to icing on the tracks and overhead wires, according to NJ Transit. Cross-honoring of passes is in effect, NJ Transit said.
  • Street cleaning was suspended in Hoboken because of ice.

Highs today are not expected to climb out of the 20s, with temperatures remaining closer to 20 than 30 in much of the state as skies remain clear. Clouds are expected to roll in tonight, and a dusting of snow to an inch is possible Wednesday.

  • There is a weather alert at Newark Liberty International Airport where the internal roadways were deemed hazardous.
  • There is a 25-mph speed restriction on the Outerbridge Crossing and Goethals Bridge between Staten Island and New Jersey
  • There is a 50-mph speed restriction on the Garden State Parkway from Brick to the New York state line
  • At 8:34 a.m., there was an accident on the New Jersey Turnpike outer roadway southbound north of Exit 13 in Elizabeth. Right lane blocked.
  • At 8:32 a.m., there was an accident on Route 18 northbound and the New Jersey Turnpike in East Brunswick
  • At 8:12a.m., there was an accident on the New Jersey Turnpike eastern spur northbound north of Exit 15E in Newark. Left and center lanes blocked.
