Young Father From Brick Loses Leg In Motorcycle Crash: Family

Cody Coburn has a 3-year-old and a newborn son who was recently released from the NICU. He was injured Saturday in Lakewood, family said.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A Brick Township man was seriously injured in a collision between his motorcycle and a Range Rover over the weekend, Lakewood police said Monday.

Cody Coburn, 23, of Brick, was taken to Jersey Shore Unversty Medical Center with a severe leg injury, Lakewood Police Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith said. He did not release Coburn's name, however, his family posted a GoFundme seeking to raise funds for the young father of two, who faces a long recovery.

Kyra Dillon, who organized a GoFundme campaign to help raise money to offset the costs of Coburn's treatment, said Coburn had to have his leg amputated and suffered damage to his left hip in the crash. He also suffered a punctured right lung and had 8 units of blood replaced, she said. She initially shared the campaign with the Lakewood Scoop, saying her brother was hurt in the crash.

"He immediately had surgery and has at least one more surgery ahead of him," Dillon wrote. "He has a long road of recovery ahead."

Staffordsmith said the crash happened about 11:45 p.m. Saturday. Coburn had been traveling west on East County Line Road when he collided with a Range Rover that was turning left, he said. The driver of the Range Rover, a 21-year-old Lakewood woman, was not injured, Staffordsmith said.

At this time the investigation is still ongoing, he said.

Coburn and his fiancee, Kennedy, have a 3-year-old daughter and a newborn son who just spent a few weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit, Dillon wrote. "His son has many follow-ups (with doctors) to attend."

Kennedy is still recovering from the birth and Coburn was their sole income, she said in a note published by the Scoop.

"He played a huge part in their financial stability. We are hoping to raise money to help them get through this difficult time without the financial burden as an added stressor," Dillon wrote on the GoFundme.
