BRIDGEWATER, NJ — The Somerset Regional Animal Shelter is busting at the seams and in need of donations after 12 cats, four dogs and one fox were turned over on Tuesday.

The amount of animals surrendered to the shelter in Bridgewater in one day could possibly be the most this year, unrelated to hoarding cases, a shelter volunteer said.

On May 7, nine of the cats, who are seniors, were turned over by an elderly woman who was getting evicted. She had the cats for 15 years, said Brian Bradshaw, director of the shelter in Bridgewater.

Three more cats were surrendered by another resident being evicted.

Four dogs were also surrendered after one owner died, one dog was too protective over the family, one family claimed a dog couldn't be house broken, and another where the owner broke her ankle and couldn't walk the dog, Bradshaw said.

Lastly, the shelter even rescued a baby fox that same day.

All of the cats and dogs will require medical work and vaccinations to get them ready to be put up for adoption. The shelter also needs supplies, and help to clean, feed and walk the animals.

As a result the shelter is asking for much needed donations including: cat and kitten food, and cleaning supplies (paper towels, toilet paper, disposable Nitrile gloves, and regular Clorox bleach). To see the shelter's Amazon's wish list click here.

Monetary donations are also accepted by visiting srasnj.org.

Donations can be shipped or dropped off to the shelter at 100 Commons Way, Bridgewater, NJ 08807. The shelter is open noon to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, and noon to 4 p.m. all other days.
