BRIDGEWATER, NJ — As Hurricane Dorian makes it way along the coast local animal shelters in the area have already begun rescuing dogs.

Somerset Regional Animal Shelter in Bridgewater took in 10 dogs on Monday.

"I call it a labor of love on Labor Day," said Shelter Manager Brian Bradshaw.

The dogs range in age from 4 months to 5 years old and are medium to large-sized breed dogs including Labrador mixes.

Bradshaw has also reached out to other shelters in the south to continue to take in more dogs. But in order to do that, dogs need to be adopted from SRAS to make room.

Some of the storm dogs are available now for adoption some should be ready in a couple of days after they are spayed or neutered and treated.

St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center also took in 5 dogs from South Carolina on Tuesday.

"We expect additional larger transports but of course this is a very fluid situation and so we are currently awaiting word on whether we will be receiving animals from South Carolina, Georgia or the Bahamas and when that will happen," said Nora Parker, spokeswoman for St. Huberts. "As of right now our transport team does not have specific info on when those transports will take place. We stand ready to welcome them and believe we will receive word soon as the nationals on site make transport arrangements."

The dogs are currently at St. Hubert's in Madison and also at their Noah’s Ark campus in Ledgewood. St. Hubert's also has a location in North Branch.

"They are all sweet dogs who, despite not knowing what was happening and the long journey arrived with wagging tails and cheerful personalities," said Parker.

Both shelters welcome donations to help care for the animals.
