2 Pedestrians Hit By Cars, 1 Dies On Route 22 In Somerset County

A Union County driver hit a pedestrian on the highway and when he got out to check, he was fatally hit by another car, said police.

NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ — A man was fatally hit by a car after he hit another pedestrian on Route 22 last week, said North Plainfield Police Chief William Parenti.

On April 4 at around 11:37 p.m., North Plainfield Police were called to Route 22 East in the area of Costco for the report of a pedestrian on the road that was possibly hit by a motor vehicle.

Police learned that two motor vehicle crashes had just taken place.

Danti Bryant, 57, of Plainfield, hit a pedestrian, later identified as Victoria Williams, 31, of North Plainfield, who was injured and now lying on Route 22 East, said Parenti.

When Bryant got out of his vehicle to investigate what he had hit, he was hit by another car being driven by Andrae Blye, 43, of Plainfield, said Parenti.

Blye was driving eastbound on Route 22 when he reportedly swerved to avoid Williams in the roadway and did not see Bryant getting out of his vehicle until after he hit him, said Parenti.

Both pedestrians were treated on the scene by North Plainfield Police and North Plainfield Fire Department / EMS. Both pedestrians were taken to Robertwood Johnson Hospital, New Brunswick where Bryant succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, said Parenti.

Williams had only minor injuries.

This accident is being investigated by the North Plainfield Police Traffic Safety Unit and the Somerset County Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART).

North Plainfield Fire Department, Greenbrook Police, and NJDOT helped the North Plainfield Police while at the scene.
