Details were revealed after two pedestrians were killed in a N.J. highway crash near a diner Thursday that closed area roads, police said.

Details were revealed after two pedestrians were killed in a New Jersey highway crash near a diner Thursday, police said.

Robert Gibbons, 29, and Magdalene Allen, 23, both of East Brunswick, were walking on Route 22 when they were struck by a 2004 Toyota Sienna driven by Xu Chengfei, 41, of Flushing N.Y., police said.

They were pronounced dead at the scene.

All lanes on U.S. 22 west near the Bridgewater Diner were closed for the "serious crash investigation," police said.

A 2004 Toyota Sienna struck the man and woman who were in the left lane of Route 22 West on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 3:12 a.m., according to Bridgewater Police Lt. Michael Maxwell.

Both pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the vehicle was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital-Somerset for non-life threatening injuries, Maxwell said.

I-287 north at Exit 14-B, onto U.S. 22 west, was also closed, police said.

Traffic coming from Bound Brook on U.S. 22 West was being diverted to Ronson Road and Foothill Road.

The crash is being investigated by the Bridgewater Township Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau and the Somerset County Accident Reconstruction Team. Any witnesses are asked to contact Bridgewater Township Traffic Safety Officer Douglas Thorsen at 908-722- 4111 ext 4154.
