43 Cats Rescued In 2 Weeks By Somerset Regional Animal Shelter

The cats were rescued from the street and most are available for adoption and range in age from 2 months to 10 years old.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — It’s been a busy two weeks for the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter in Bridgewater who rescued 43 cats.

Due to the frigid cold temperatures recently, shelters in New Jersey were taking in more cats off the streets. However, those shelters ran out of room and that’s when SRAS Director Brian Bradshaw stepped in.

Bradshaw went to the Newark Humane Society about two weeks ago and brought back 26 cats. On Sunday, Jan. 20, he then picked up 17 more cats from the St. Hubert’s Welfare Center in Madison.

“They needed people to take these cats,” said Bradshaw of his trip Sunday. “It was my day off but I wanted to help anyway.”

The cats range in age from 2 months old to 10 years old. Most are on “the younger side,” Bradshaw said.

The initial 26 cats taken in from Newark are now ready for adoption, the cats from Madison are still undergoing vaccinations and being spayed or neutered, Bradshaw said.

Bradshaw noted that SRAS is now “packed” and needs to find homes for these cats. Additionally donations are needed to help cover costs to care for the new cats.

“Donations are always welcomed,” Bradshaw said. “Cats coming off the street always need so much work.”

Locals can help out by donating at srasnj.org/donate or buying supplies from the SRAS' Amazon wish list by clicking here. Additionally, volunteers and fosters are always needed. Interested volunteers can visit the Friends of Somerset Regional Animal Shelter's website at fosras.com.
