BRIDGEWATER, NJ — A total of 52 roadways in the township will see a facelift as part of Bridgewater's 5-year road improvement plan.
The Bridgewater Council unanimously approved several resolutions to continue progress on the road plan at its April 21 meeting.
The resolutions awarded contracts to a variety of engineering firms which will cover the proposed work in the plan for all six roadway improvement regions, as well as NJDOT grant projects and work the Township is doing in partnership with New Jersey American Water.

"It is exciting to see the 2022 road plan getting some traction," said Councilman Timothy Ring. "We did not approve engineering contracts until the middle of May last year and I am hopeful that these few extra weeks will have our residents see work starting, and the positive results, more quickly. I would like to thank our Township Engineering Office for all the hard work they did in getting these before the Council this evening."
The roads that made the list this year include:

"The 2022 road plan continues the great progress we saw last year," said Council President Allen Kurdyla. "The roads we are targeting for improvement are among the most distressed in the Township."
One of the packages that was approved includes a series of roads identified by New Jersey American Water that needed water main maintenance. While NJ American Water offered to mill and repave the roads, the Township Engineer determined that many of these roads needed full reconstruction and that milling and repaving the roads would not be sustainable long term.
The township will move ahead with designing the sub-base and drainage upgrades needed before the road can be repaved. When this work is complete, NJ American Water has agreed to come back and pave the roadways
"I am particularly proud of the work that we are doing in partnership with New Jersey American Water as many of these roads could have easily been included in this year’s formal road plan at full cost," said Council Vice President Michael Kirsh. "The Township saw an opportunity to find savings for our residents and did not let it pass us by. It is encouraging to see that these thoughtful decisions are being made, within the scope of our overall road plan, for the benefit of the community."
The packages approved include:
- $85,000 to Colliers Engineering & Design for Newberry Street, Radel Avenue, and Ramsey Street
- $151,210 to Remington & Vernick Engineers for Chestnut Street, McGovern Court, Traci Road, Walters Brook Drive North, Maple Street, and Oak Street

The repaving of these roads in 2022 is part of the township's plan that Bridgewater Mayor Matthew Moench put into motion in 2020. In 2021, a total of 31 roads were paved.
The plan calls on the township to spend $8 million each year over the next 5 years to remedy the roadways after all of 600 township roadways were assessed and ranked from best to worst. Read More: Bridgewater Ranks Roads From Best To Worst, Creates Plan For 2021
The township has set up a website, ourbwroads.com, where residents can learn more about the 5-year plan, see how their roads rank as far as worst to best and also see upcoming projects.
