SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — Somerset County residents are invited to attend the First Saturday and E-Waste Drop-Off events on Saturday, June 6 at sites in Bridgewater and Hillsborough.

The county said 887 residents attended both events in May to dispose of electronic waste and other unwanted recyclables.

Proof of Somerset County residency is required, and accepted documents include a valid driver's license, lease, tax bill or utility bill.

The First Saturday Drop-off will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Somerset County Recycling Center, 40 Polhemus Lane in Bridgewater.

The Electronic Waste Drop-off event will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South County Public Works Garage, 410 Roycefield Road in Hillsborough.

Pre-registration is not required, and businesses and commercial vehicles are not permitted.

Recycling starts before materials reach the curb. Residents in the 20-gallon blue bucket program should place rinsed containers, glass jars and bottles, and cans directly in the bucket. Cardboard and newspapers should be bundled separately with string or twine.

For the dual stream tote program, rinsed plastics, glass and metal belong in the yellow-lid commingled tote, while flattened cardboard, chipboard and paper go in the green-lid paper tote.

The county also reminded residents not to place trash or food waste in recycling containers.

At the Bridgewater event, residents may drop off up to eight tires, with or without rims, as well as scrap metal, used motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze and usual curbside materials.

The county said accepted chipboard items include gift, shoe, shirt and retail boxes, along with cereal, cookie, pasta, cake and cracker boxes without plastic liners, poster board, backing from writing pads and empty dried-out steel paint cans. Textiles are not accepted at the First Saturday event.

At the Hillsborough electronic waste event, accepted items include computers, monitors, televisions, printers, scanners, cameras, DVD players, e-book readers, VCRs, phones, circuit boards, modems, cables, wiring, power supplies and controllers. Batteries are not accepted.

Residents should remain in their vehicles at both events unless instructed otherwise by staff.

For more information about First Saturday, residents can contact the Somerset County Recycling Center at 732-469-3363 or visit www.somersetcountynj.gov/recycle.

For electronic waste and household hazardous waste questions, the release directs residents to the Somerset County Division of Solid Waste Management at 908-231-7109 or solidwaste@somersetcountynj.gov.
