BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Four fourth-grade students at Bradley Gardens Elementary School turned a class project into a fundraiser that brought in $863 for the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter.
The project came from a math lesson extension in Trevor Deysher and Amy Urbanowicz's class at the Bridgewater school.
Students were asked to create their own project, and Helen Brown, Harper Lynes, Willa Rath and Julie Sabella chose one that would support the animal shelter.
The girls brainstormed ideas, got approval from their teachers and principal, and then put their plan into action.
The group decided to raise money by duct-taping their teacher, Trevor Deysher, to the cafeteria wall.
As part of the assignment, they worked through the numbers to decide how much money they wanted to raise, how much tape they would need, and the cost compared with the donation amount.
The fundraiser was held on May 1 at Bradley Gardens School.
During lunch periods, students and staff could donate $2 for one piece of duct tape to place on Deysher.
Deysher stood on a chair while people added tape. At the end of the lunch periods, the chair was pulled out from under him, and he briefly remained taped to the wall.
The event gave the students a hands-on way to use math skills while supporting a local organization.
The fundraiser also involved planning and getting school approval before the idea could move forward.
The four students, Helen Brown, Harper Lynes, Willa Rath and Julie Sabella, delivered the final donation of $863 to the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter.
The Somerset Regional Animal Shelter(SRAS) at 100 Commons Way in Bridgewater is open daily from noon to 3:30 p.m.
SRAS is a nonprofit organization that services pets in the Somerset County area. The shelter is always in need of donations.
