BRIDGEWATER, NJ — A 12-inch water main break on North Bridge Street in Bridgewater has triggered a mandatory boil water advisory for about 400 customers in the affected area, said New Jersey American Water on Friday.
The mandatory boil water advisory also includes two senior centers with a combined 300 residents, Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School, the Somerset County Library and Somerset County Vo-Tech High School.
The company said the advisory followed a loss of pressure tied to the break.
"A potential or actual threat to the quality of water being provided to the above area currently exists," American Water states. "As a precaution, we are implementing a Boil Water Advisory until testing of the water supply is deemed satisfactory."
Customers along the following streets are impacted:
Effective immediately and until further notice, customers in the impacted area are being told to bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow it to cool before using it, or use bottled water instead.
New Jersey American Water said boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, preparing foods, mixing baby formula, food, juices.
Due to the break, Bridgewater police said North Bridge Street between Prince Rodgers Ave and 7th Avenue remains closed for 12 to 24 hours.
The Somerset County Library System's Bridgewater branch is also closed on Friday.
