BRIDGEWATER, NJ — The Bridgewater Youth Council has launched a new monthly art contest after residents asked for more opportunities to express and celebrate art in the township.
A few months ago, the council distributed a survey asking residents about the improvements, developments and issues they would like to see addressed in Bridgewater.
According to the Bridgewater Youth Council, many responses pointed to a desire for greater opportunities to express and celebrate art.
That feedback led the council to create a monthly art contest open to all age groups.
The May Art Contest is part of the council's new initiatives.
One winning piece came from 7-year-old second grader Nia Singh, whose artwork took first place in her age category.
Participants in that group were asked to draw or paint a spring landscape that showed what they love most about the season.
Singh's work was featured at the top among the winning submissions.
The other featured winner was Ravneet Kaur Mandla, identified as a local artist.
Her artwork won in the adult category. For that division, participants were challenged to create a scene blending nature with man-made objects or structures.
Mandla's work reflects how simple daily rituals can deepen appreciation of the natural world.
The contest is open to all age groups, which the Youth Council said was one way to widen access to arts participation in the community.
The May contest marks the start of what the council described as a monthly offering.
