BRANCHBURG, NJ — A longtime couple got a celebration years in the making when Midland School in Branchburg and a local group home came together to honor Suzy and Brian after 25 years together.
Suzy had been dreaming of a wedding for some time, said Julie Liebman, a close friend of the couple.
With help from family and the couple's caretakers, a celebration was organized to mark their relationship and bring together the people closest to them.
The event centered on a commitment ceremony officiated by Tiffany Knight, a group home employee, said Liebman.
The day also drew support from local residents and businesses who donated services to help make the celebration possible.
Nicole of Baked with Love by Nichole donated the wedding cake.
Joan Bermudo did Suzy's makeup and Kyle from Impossible Entertainment provided DJ services for the event.
Photography was also donated.
The effort grew after Knight posted on the Somerville Facebook page asking whether anyone in the community would be willing to participate.
The response was described as overwhelming and, according to Liebman, showed how much people were willing to do to help make the day possible.
Liebman describes Suzy and Brian's relationship as one shaped by challenges, but also by steady love and support for one another.
During the celebration, Suzy pointed out many of the people in the room and made clear how important they were to her.
Brian signaled to people as they entered and invited them over so he could take a photo with them, said Liebman.
Liebman says both appeared proud and happy to have family, friends and caregivers gathered together in one place.
