SOMERVILLE, NJ — A new specialty Yemeni café has opened in Somerville, with Moka & Co. now operating at 15 W Main St.
According to the company, the Somerville shop is part of a brand built around Yemeni coffee traditions, design and community.
The concept was created by a group of friends who saw coffee as more than a drink and wanted to build a café experience rooted in heritage, said Moka & Co.
Moka & Co. officially launched in 2024, although the idea began earlier inside a Yemeni restaurant in Dearborn, Michigan.
According to the company, that early version introduced guests to authentic Yemeni coffee traditions before the global pandemic paused the original concept.
The brand later returned with a focus on building "a modern lifestyle brand centered around the world's oldest coffee culture."
Moka & Co. says its name is inspired by the historic Port of Mokha in Yemen, which it describes as a major coffee trading port and a gateway through which coffee reached the world.
According to the company, the "& Co." in the name reflects relationships with coffee farmers in Yemen and with the communities that gather in its cafés.
Moka describes its stores as spaces where people can connect, learn and enjoy coffee, with drinks that range from traditional Yemeni brewing methods to modern specialty offerings.
According to Moka & Co., its beans are 100 percent organic Yemeni beans and are not mixed with lower-quality beans.
The company says farmers handpick beans on mountainous terrain and sun-dry them on rooftops, avoiding chemical inputs and preservatives.
