SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — Somerset County residents are invited to two recycling events on Saturday, Sept. 12, including the First Saturday Drop-off in Bridgewater and an Electronic Waste Drop-off in Hillsborough.
Both events will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and proof of Somerset County residency is required.
According to the county, 730 residents attended the August events to dispose of electronic waste and other recyclables. Pre-registration is not required.
Accepted proof of residency includes a valid driver's license, lease, tax bill or utility bill. Businesses and commercial vehicles are not permitted.
The First Saturday Drop-off will be held at the Somerset County Recycling Center, 40 Polhemus Lane, Bridgewater.
Residents must stay inside their vehicles while staff unloads recyclable materials.
The county said residents may drop off up to eight tires, with or without rims, as well as scrap metal, used motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze and usual curbside materials.
The county also listed accepted curbside items including plastic bottles and food containers marked #1 through #7.
Accepted chipboard includes gift, shoe, shirt and retail boxes, along with cereal, cookie, pasta, cake and cracker boxes without plastic liners, poster board, backing from writing pads and empty dried-out steel paint cans.
Textiles are not accepted at the First Saturday event. Residents are asked to use local charity donation bins for used textiles.
The Electronic Waste Drop-off will take place at the South County Public Works Garage, 410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough.
Residents should expect to remain in their vehicles unless staff instructs otherwise.
Accepted items include computers, monitors, televisions, printers, scanners, cameras, DVD players, e-book readers, VCRs, phones, circuit boards, modems, cables, wiring, power supplies and controllers.
Batteries are not accepted at the e-waste event. The county said residents can recycle household hazardous waste, including lithium and rechargeable batteries, at scheduled Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off events.
The announcement also reminded residents that recycling starts before materials reach the curb.
For the 20-gallon blue bucket program, rinsed containers, glass jars and bottles, and cans should go in the bucket, while cardboard and newspapers should be bundled separately with string or twine.
For the dual stream tote program, rinsed plastics, glass and metal belong in the yellow-lid tote, and flattened cardboard, chipboard and paper go in the green-lid tote.
