BRIDGEWATER, NJ — A fundraiser has been launched in memory of Levi Nicholas Santos, a 16-year-old Bridgewater boy killed while riding an electric scooter last week.
His family hopes to create a scholarship for a student pursuing a future in auto mechanics.
The scholarship fund is intended to honor Levi's interest in the automotive field and support a student who reflects the qualities they said defined him.
In the GoFundMe fundraiser, the family wrote, "On Oct. 27, the world lost a beautiful soul, and heaven gained a perfect angel: Levi Nicholas Santos."
Bridgewater Police said the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. when a Tesla was driving westbound on Union Avenue and Santos was riding an e-scooter eastbound on Union Avenue and went through the intersection. Read More: Crash Kills 16-Year-Old E-Scooter Rider In Bridgewater
The Tesla reportedly turned left and hit the boy as he went through the intersection. Santos was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerville, where he died from his injuries.
The family said the scholarship "was established in loving memory of Levi to celebrate the young man he was and to carry his passions, dreams, and values forward."
According to the fundraiser, the family hopes to provide financial assistance to "a deserving student who shares Levi's passion for auto mechanics and dreams of a future in the automotive field."
The fundraiser says the family especially wants to support a student who shows "a strong work ethic, determination, kindness, generosity, and a willingness to help others."
The family said Levi had imagined a future in the automotive industry.
In the fundraiser, they wrote, "Although he will not have the opportunity to follow that dream himself, we hope to help another young person pursue theirs in his honor."
They also said he "had a natural ability to work with his hands."
The fundraiser includes remembrances from friends.
One described Levi as "incredibly bright and always willing to lend a helping hand," and another said he was "mature and strong... even though he was younger than me, I really looked up to him."
Another friend wrote, "He was always there to pick me up when I was down and was always very motivated to make me go the extra mile. In very tough times in my life, there was always one person I could go to, and that was Levi."
The family wrote that each donation will help make the scholarship possible and allow Levi's passion to become part of someone else's future.
They added, "We must always remember to be just a little bit like Levi."
