RARITAN, NJ — A fire broke out in an upstairs apartment above Nik's Raritan Pub on Saturday causing the restaurant to be shut down.

On Dec. 28 at 1:50 p.m. police arrived at 53 West Somerset St. to find residents had already escaped.

The Raritan Borough Fire Department and the Somerville Fire Department were able to quickly put out the fire, which caused the apartment to be uninhabitable, Raritan Police Sgt. Everett Holt said.

Extinguishing the fire caused extensive water damage to Nik’s Raritan Pub below, Holt said.

"While the fire itself didn't hit the downstairs, the water damage from above and the smoke have forced us to shut down," Nik's Raritan Pub stated on Monday. "We hope to repair the ceilings and floors and whatever else is damaged in due time."

The cause of the fire was not suspicious, according to an investigation by the Raritan Borough Fire Marshall.

One resident was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and refused further medical attention, Holt said.
