B-R High School Football Team Rallies Past Elizabeth For 17-13 Victory

A rally that was capped by an exciting 61-yard touchdown pass play between Joe Spirra and Colin Woodring with 1:34 to play in the fourth quarter resulted in Bridgewater-Raritan High School’s thrilling 17-13 victory over Elizabeth High School on the afternoon of Saturday, October 15, at Williams Field in Elizabeth.

Bridgewater-Raritan erased a 13-3 deficit with 11:52 ro play in the final period.

The visiting Panthers struck when running back Drew Davis bolted 67 yards to the end zone and Sam Valeira kicked the conversion to cut Elizabeth’s lead to 13-10 with 11:29 remaining.

Elizabeth then tried to seal the victory with a late fourth-down pass at the Bridgewater-Raritan 28, but the pass fell incomplete to give the Panthers hope with 2:38 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Spirra then completed two short passes to Matt Maciolek to move the ball to the Bridgewater-Raritan 39, but his next two passes fell incomplete, But he then responded by throwing a deep strike to Woodring, who made a splendid catch in single coverage and ran to the end zone for the 61-yard touchdown with 1:34 to go.

Valeira, who kicked a 32-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, converted his second extra point to put the Panthers up, 17-13, for their first lead of the game. Bridgewater-Raritan then stopped Elizabeth deep in its own territory to end the game and improve to 3-5. Elizabeth dropped to 2-5.

Next up for the Panthers will be Bridgewater-Raritan Cheer/Football Senior Night on Friday, October 20, when they play their regular-season finale against Old Bridge High School at Basilone Field in Bridgewater.
