Can You Solve This Bridgewater Couple's Escape Room? Here's A Look Inside

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Problem solvers looking for a unique challenge should check out Ultimate Xscape Rooms in Somerville where a Bridgewater husband and wife team custom creates every detail.

"We create all of the puzzles from scratch," said Kimberly Lucci who owns the escape room at 1 West Main St., 2nd Floor, in Somerville with her husband Patrick Scaglione.

Unlike franchise-based escape rooms, Lucci and Scaglione create and build each room and puzzle using their own ideas.

"We personally collect our pieces at estate sales and yard sales," said Lucci.

The couple, who have been married for more than 30 years, was visiting North Carolina when they went into an escape room with their family.

"We had kids and adults of different ages and we all had a blast," said Scaglione.

They loved the idea so much Scaglione, who sits on the Somerville Revitalization Board, suggested one open in the borough to give visitors a more interactive experience.

"We wanted to create an entertainment venue that had synergy with the dining and restaurant scene in Somerville," said Scaglione.

Currently, the couple has two rooms open for exploration including Thomas Edison's Secret Laboratory and the Dragon Castle. Two more rooms are in the works set to open in 2022 including Sherlocked and Wizarding School.

Each room takes months to put together and even longer to create the puzzles. But the best part? The couple gets to test out their puzzles.

"We spend about two weeks testing. Trial and error," said Scaglione.

The rooms are well suited for adults and kids older than 8.

"We are more family-friendly. Not so scary, no jump scares and no gore," said Lucci.

Ultimate Xscape Rooms also offers online experiences and can serve as a team-building experience for corporate events or birthday parties.

In the end, it's all about having a good experience.

"It doesn't really matter if you escape or how fast because you will still have fun," said Lucci.
