Bridgewater Mom Is Proof Dreams Come True: Opens Hair Salon

"It feels like I am still dreaming and I haven't woken up yet," the Hairitage Hair Lounge owner said.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Dreams do come true and Bridgewater mother of three, Jessica Colon is proof of that.

A single mother at 19 years old, Colon found herself and her three daughters sleeping in the car in the parking lot of a motel. Now she is celebrating the grand opening of her very own salon, on the verge of buying her dream home and getting married to the love of her life.

“My life has made a total 360,” Colon told Patch. “From 2004 when I was just a 19-year-old single mother to now being 30 something having three children and being able to own my own place is such an amazing feeling.”

Colon is celebrating the grand opening of her salon Hairitage Hair Lounge at 5 p.m. at 131 N Gaston Avenue in Somerville. There will be booking specials, food, music, entertainment, giveaways and door prizes.

“It feels like I am still dreaming and I haven’t woken up yet,” Colon said. “Before this, the struggle was so real it was not even funny.”

Colon’s dream of opening her own salon started very young.

“I learned how to French braid at five years old on my dolls,” Colon said. “It was always a passion but I didn’t know it would be my career.”

When she decided to follow her dream, Colon was unemployed but was able to get a grant because of her situation to help pay for her to go to cosmetology school.

Her daughter told her the other day about how she remembered sleeping on other people’s floors because they didn’t have a house.

Colon remembers waiting in line at the Social Security office and sleeping in the car in motel parking lots.

“I’ve been at that place where I was stuck, but I was able to get out and overcome,” Colon said.

She worked at a few salons here and there and had always dreamed of opening her own salon.

“But I thought that was unachievable because I am a mom with three children,” Colon said.

Her mother gave her the reassurance to follow her dream.

She found the location in Somerville and with the help of her mom and fiancé, she was able to make her dream a reality.

Her entire family helped create her salon, which Colon designed every detail from scratch.

“The whole entire salon is DIY (Do It Yourself),” Colon said. “Everything is from garage sales since I did not have a lot of money to do this.”

The final product is amazing, it brings Colon to tears thinking about how far she has come.

“I am doing this to give my daughters Tia, Hazel, and Jayla a strong independent role model and I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the love and support of my family and fiancé Stephan who has been my rock,” Colon said.

Hairitage Hair Lounge services men, women and children and specializes in weddings, proms, and special events.
