Pedestrian Fatally Hit By Car While Walking On Route 22 In Somerset County: Cops

The 47-year-old Bridgewater man was reportedly walking in and out of traffic on the highway in Branchburg before he was hit, said police.

BRANCHBURG, NJ — A Bridgewater man, who was walking on Route 22, was fatally hit by a car on Route 22 in Branchburg on Saturday.

At around 11:44 a.m., Branchburg Police was called to the area of Route 22 West and France Drive for the report of a person walking in and out of traffic, said Branchburg Police Captain Edward Edgar.

While driving to the area, Branchburg patrol units were updated and told that a pedestrian had been hit by a motor vehicle, said Edgar.

Officers saw an injured person, later identified as a 47-year-old Bridgewater resident, in the left lane of travel on Route 22 West before County Line Road, and immediately began to render medical aid.

The pedestrian was alert and conscious, however it was apparent that he had sustained injuries from the crash, said Edgar.

Medical aid was ultimately turned over to the Branchburg Rescue Squad EMS who requested New Jersey State Police(NJSP) Medivac for transport to the hospital.

A landing zone was set up for NJSP Medivac at Raritan Valley Community College with the help of North Branch Fire, and the person was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick by helicopter.

The pedestrian was later pronounced dead at the hospital. His name is being withheld from this release out of respect for his family and loved ones at this time, said Edgar.

The investigation remains ongoing.
