BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Armed with snowballs, tactical masks and bulletproof vests, Bridgewater Police rolled onto a township street Wednesday afternoon ready for a fight – not just any fight but a snowball fight against township kids.

The kids challenged the police department to a fight through their Facebook page and began building and stockpiling snowballs over the next two days, Bridgewater Police Lt. John Mitzak said.

Police accepted the challenge and arrived on Overlook Drive around 4 p.m. with about 10 to 12 patrol cars and detectives with their lights and sirens on and announcing on the speaker system they were ready to take on the neighborhood kids in the snowball fight.

"We actually had no idea how this was going to go down which is why it was so funny and can hear me laughing so hysterically," said Stacey Friedlander, who took the videos and is a mom to two of the kids involved. "We thought just a couple of detectives were going to come down and challenge the kids not the whole department."

Even though there was only five kids, Mitzak said "the kids absolutely won" the fight despite being outnumbered.

Police even threw some of the kids into the back of their patrol cars, with the parents' permission.

"They definitely went above and beyond for these kids and it’ll be something they will talk about and remember for a long time," Friedlander said.

The kids involved in the fight were Max and Jack Friedlander and neighbors Rebecca, Tyler and Catelynn Lindvay.

Bridgewater Officers that participated, most of whom were off-duty, included: Capt. Payne, Lt. Mitzak, Officer Kaczynski, Officer Conroy, Officer Sujanski, Officer Kennedy, Officer Leight, Sgt. Lamey, Detective Coletta, Detective Bowers, Detective Reilly, Detective Sgt. Rice, Officer Mendoza, Detective Delaney, and Officer Hodel.

Mitzak said the whole fight was "a lot of fun." And the kids noted they plan to challenge the department to a rematch next year on their "own turf."
