BRIDGEWATER, NJ — The Bridgewater Council approved an update to the Township emblem that enhances the flag, George Washington's face, and trees that were on the original emblem.

This initiative was led by Council President Michael Kirsh with a goal of refreshing and providing additional detail for the previous design, adopted in 1976.

"It was crucial that we maintain the intent and overall character of the original emblem while providing a clearer display of all elements. This is a visually bold look that suits modern electronic and print needs while maintaining the history and fabric of Bridgewater," said Council President Michael Kirsh.

Kirsh said he discussed his refreshed look with the designer of the original emblem, that was approved in 1976, and "she was very excited about it. She believes that it represents her vision even better than the one ultimately adopted."

Mayor Matthew Moench he was a little skeptical at first of the idea, but thinks Kirsh did a really great job.

"It looks really sharp," said Moench.

The new emblem retains the image of George Washington acknowledging Bridgewater’s history, trees representing our scenic nature, and the geographic outline of the Township. The Betsy Ross flag image was purposely changed to the Hokinson flag, celebrating the first time the stars and stripes were flown in the United States above the Middlebrook Encampment in 1777. The new design also more prominently highlights 1749, the year of Bridgewater’s Royal Charter. Next year, 2024, will be the milestone's 275th Anniversary.

The updated design was approved by the majority of the council at the Feb. 16 meeting. Councilman Filipe Pedroso was the only one against the change.

"I respectfully ask you to protect our history, our heritage, and what we are as Bridgewater as has been proudly displayed in the township's original and only emblem," said Pedroso.

Councilman Timothy Ring reiterated that the emblem change is "not a new logo... this is a refresh."

Ring noted that the approved emblem better defines the trees that were previously displayed on the left-hand side of the logo, better defines the portrait of George Washington on the right side of logo, and replaces the Betsy Ross flag with the Hokinson flag that has a historical connection to Bridgewater.

"This logo is not a new logo by any means. It is a refresh of what we currently have. I think it captures all of the pieces that are still there and better defines them," said Ring.

The Township has begun substituting the new emblem on its various digital channels.
