Bridgewater Woman Hit By Car, Dies After Trying To Cross Road

The pedestrian was trying to reach the bus stop on the opposite side of Route 28 on Sunday morning, said police.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — A Bridgewater woman was killed after she was hit by a car while trying to cross the road on Sunday morning.

On Nov. 19 at 9:55 a.m., Bridgewater Township Police were called to a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on Union Avenue (State Highway 28) near the intersection of Finderne Avenue.

The pedestrian, who was identified as Maria Arevalo Zuniga, 77, of Bridgewater, was walking across Union Avenue trying to reach the bus stop on the opposite side of the roadway, said Bridgewater Police Traffic Safety Officer Cole Taggert.

The vehicle involved in the crash was a 2015 Honda CRV, being driven by David Kumar, 73, of Somerville. Kumar was driving east on Union Avenue.

Members of the Finderne Volunteer Rescue Squad as well as Robert Wood Johnson Hospital Paramedics came to help and Arevalo Zuniga was later taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJ) in New Brunswick

Arevalo Zuniga succumbed to her injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead by at 4:48 p.m.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.

The Bridgewater Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Bureau is investigating.
