BOUND BROOK, NJ — It’s not only the two-legged that need protecting but the furry four-legged ones too, as a dog and a cat were both rescued after being trapped on a roof of a Bound Brook home Tuesday.

Bound Brook Police Officer Tom Burgin has been serving and protecting the town for 12 years but this is the first time he had to rescue a dog and cat.

Around 11:15 a.m. on Sept. 24, a neighbor spotted the dog on the roof of a home on West Second Street.

"When I got there I could see the dog and then saw the cat as well on the roof," Burgin said.

The dog had apparently tore through a second floor window screen allowing the animals to get onto the first floor roof.

Burgin tried ringing the doorbell to the home and calling the homeowner but he got no response.

"After a couple of minutes I saw a van with a roof rack and ladder on top pull into the driveway across the street,” Burgin said. “I explained what was going on and he gave me the ladder."

With the help of Sgt. Jeff Raub, who steadied the ladder, Burgin was able to climb up. When Burgin got up to the roof the cat ran back inside the open window while the dog began barking out of fear.

"It was nerve wracking to go up there because I didn’t know if the dog would bite me because he was scared," Burgin said. "He was barking because he was upset. But I got him to feel comfortable enough to come closer to me."

That’s when Burgin grabbed the dog’s harness-type leash and carried him down the ladder.

The dog and cat were uninjured, as well as the officers. Burgin was very happy to help the animals.

"It was a good feeling, I have a dog and would never want to see a dog in jeopardy of getting injured or falling off the roof," Burgin said.

The police noted they "decided not to charge the cat who we suspect lured the dog out."
