Flood Watch Issued In Somerset County Ahead Of Forecasted Heavy Rain

Rainfall rates may exceed 1-2 inches per hour, which may result in flash flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A flood watch has been issued for Somerset County ahead of forecasted heavy rain on Wednesday.

The watch issued by the National Weather Service(NWS) is from 2 a.m. on Wednesday through 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

"Showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rain are expected to cross the region late tonight through Wednesday. Rainfall rates may exceed 1-2 inches per hour, which may result in flash flooding," according to the NWS.

As a result, excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Tuesday Afternoon: Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. West wind around 5 mph.

Tuesday Night: A chance of showers, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 a.m. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Low around 65. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. High near 76. South wind around 5 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 11 p.m., then a slight chance of showers between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 58. North wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 75. North wind 5 to 10 mph.
