Free Wellness Programs at County Park Commission Facilities

Applying funds donated by Whole Foods in Bridgewater, New Jersey, the Somerset County Park Foundation and the Somerset County Park Commission will continue the Wellness Program Series.

The Wellness Program Series, coordinated by the Recreation and Science Departments, will be free to the public and will feature one health-enhancing program each month at various park locations. Information is available at www.somersetcountyparks.org.

Adults are discovering that vegetable gardening is popular again and people are diving back into growing their own tomatoes, cucumbers, and basil plants in the ground, containers, and beds. Charlie Nardozzi, author, radio voice, and speaker will cover all the basics of a successful vegetable garden, including fall planting. He will discuss varieties, siting the garden, soil, fertilizing, watering, season extending tips, and pest controls. The program is free. Family and friends age14 and up are invited to join representatives from the Somerset County Department of Health to learn about insects including mosquitoes and ticks that are both a nuisance and can cause a number of illnesses such as Dengue fever, West Nile virus, Zika and Lyme disease. As part of the ongoing Fight-the-Bite! Program, they will share info, resources, and materials to help everyone avoid unwanted bites. The program is free. Adults will become empowered by learning the importance of situational awareness, de-escalation strategies, and simple physical techniques to help defend themselves in a potential violent encounter. Seminar leader Michael Mastrogiovanni , a law enforcement officer for more than thirty years, has taught police officers, adults, and children self-defense skills. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and will be required to perform light to medium physical activity. The program is free. This presentation will enable women to understand and appreciate the beauty that surrounds the female reproductive system and learn how hormones are designed to impact every aspect of emotional and physical health. ZUMBA FAMILY GLOW PARTY

Family and friends of all ages will join a Glow Party, the most anticipated Zumba class of the year. Dance to your families’ favorite songs and play silly games while clothes glow in the dark. The evening will be fun and active for everyone. Parent participation and supervision of children is required. For extra excitement, wear clothes that will glow under the black light.
