Groundhog Day 2016: Did He See His Shadow?

Milltown Mel in New Jersey and Punxsutawney Phill in Pennsylvania differ in opinions. Which one do you believe?

Milltown, NJ -- With balmy temperatures melting snow and flood warnings predicted in New Jersey, which ground hog will you believe?

The famous Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow, which means he’s predicting an early spring.

The forecast by the famous groundhog was announced just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday from Punxsutawney, Pa.

But let’s look at a more Jersey hog, Milltown Mel II of Middlesex County. The original Milltown Mel died in July.

Just as his predecessor has done for the past seven years, Miltown Mel II is predicting six more weeks of winter, according to nj.com.

Miltown Mel has had a pretty good track record. He had only predicted the weather wrong one time in 2014, according to nj.com.

Turtleback Zoo’s Essex Ed has yet to make a prediction. The late sleeper will come out at 11 a.m. today in West Orange to check out his shadow.

Groundhog history tells us if the groundhog sees his shadow, he takes it as an omen of six more weeks of winter and returns to his hole. If he comes out of hibernation and it’s a cloudy day, there’s no shadow, and it means spring is coming early.
