During Read Across America children at Kangaroo Kids enjoyed the many books of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. Special guests, parents, and Sparkee came to share the festivities of Read Across America.

On Wednesday, February 26th, Sparkee & Ken Wooley from the Somerset Patriots treated the children at Kangaroo Kids to story-time for Read Across America.

Children and teachers dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss Character and wore a silly hats as all the classes read The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday. They also enjoyed silly science fun as they made “Oobleck,” after reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck. Teachers read The Foot Book and Fox in Socks as children wore silly or mismatched socks to school.

The program also encourages parents to foster a love of reading in their families and demonstrates the values which benefit families who make time to read together.

The celebration took flight in May 1997 when a group of teachers decided to institute a day to get kids and their parents excited about reading. Thus, was born the largest celebration of reading that this nation has ever seen. Teachers, politicians, actors, athletes, librarian’s parents and grandparents have all become active in the endeavor.

Children who are motivated to appreciate reading become better, more committed students, who ultimately enjoy artistic and musical endeavors as well as academic endeavors.

Kangaroo Kids has been an avid supporter of Read Across America since it's inception in 1991 and uses each teachable moment as an opportunity to encourage its students to " READ READ READ"
