WARREN, NJ — Hateful words and images were found scrawled on a Somerset County playground this past weekend.

Warren Township residents using the playground at the Municipal Complex on Saturday reported the graffiti to officials.

"It is shocking that hateful images would be posted in such a public way, especially in an area that is utilized by our children. A playground is meant to be a safe place for children to play without being confronted with hateful messages," according to the township in a release.

The graffiti was reported to the Warren Township Police Department, the Recreation Department, and the Department of Public Works. The police investigation is ongoing and the graffiti has been removed by the Police Department and Public Works Department.

However, resident Leanna Wellerding said more graffiti was found drawn on the previously cleaned area on Wednesday.

"The Township Committee will not tolerate hate targeted at any race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, heritage, or cultural background. We will be discussing methods to promote inclusion in our community and will work jointly with the Boards of Education to educate our young adults," wrote the township.

"We do not tolerate antisemitism, racial, or any other hate crimes. This incident is unacceptable and we take it personally. The Township Committee will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our residents, especially our children," said Mayor Gary DiNardo.

Warren is an inclusive community and such language and images do not portray the spirit of our Township, according to the township.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Warren Township Police Department.
