Here's Who's Running For Somerset County Seats In 2022 Primary

Three seats are up for grabs for the Somerset County Sheriff, Clerk, and Commissioner.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — Monday was the deadline to file for the upcoming primary election in June. Six candidates have announced their intention to run for the Somerset County Sheriff, Clerk, and Commissioner.

Somerset County Sheriff

Incumbent Sheriff Darrin Russo filed as Democrat and challenger John Sheridan filed as a Republican for the Somerset County Sheriff's open seat. They are both unopposed in the primary.

Russo first took office in 2020. He has been a resident of Franklin Township for more than 30 years and is married for more than 30 years with five boys. He is also a retired lieutenant from the Franklin Township Police Department serving for more than 30 years. See his election profile from 2019 here.

Sheridan currently serves as Emergency Management Director in Hillsborough Township.

Somerset County Clerk

Incumbent Steve Peter filed as Democrat and challenger Suzanne Maeder filed as a Republican for the Somerset County Clerk's open seat. They are both unopposed in the primary.

Peter took office in 2018 and lives in Somerville with his wife Elizabeth.

Maeder currently is serving as Councilwoman in Manville where she was appointed in 2020.

Somerset County Commissioner

Incumbent Melonie Marano filed as Democrat and challenger Amber Murad filed as a Republican for the Somerset County Commissioner's only open seat. They are both unopposed in the primary.

Marano took office in 2020 as Commissioner. She previously served as Committeewoman and Mayor of Green Brook. See her election profile from 2019 here.

Murad previously ran and lost for a Commissioner seat in 2021. She currently serves as a Watchung Board of Education Member. She is married with two children and has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Maryland University College. See her election profile from 2021 here.

New Jersey's primary election will be held on June 8 and the general election on Nov. 2. The one winning candidate will serve a 3-year term on the township committee.
