I-78 East Overpass Closures Planned Next Week In Basking Ridge

The closures will happen daily through most of the week in Somerset County.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — A portion of Interstate 78 East will be closed during the day next week for rockfall mitigation work, announced New Jersey Department of Transportation(NJDOT).

The right shoulder on I-78 eastbound before the Somerville Road overpass in Bernards Township is scheduled to be closed from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day Monday, Oct. 3 through Wednesday, Oct. 5.

On Thursday, Oct. 6 during the same time, the right lane and shoulder are scheduled to be closed for the installation of a construction barrier to create a work zone in the right shoulder for rockfall mitigation work in advance of the bridge deck replacement. If necessary, the right lane will be closed on Friday, Oct. 7 as well.

The $6.2 million federally-funded Somerville Road Bridges over I-78 project will replace the decks of the Somerville Road Bridges over the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-78 in Bernards Township, Somerset County. Initial work will include rockfall mitigation on I-78 and utility relocation on Somerville Road. The project is anticipated to be complete in the summer of 2024.
