John Basilone Parade Canceled Due To Tropical Storm Threat

RARITAN, NJ — The 42nd Annual John Basilone Memorial Parade honoring its National World War II hero, Marine Sergeant John Basilone is canceled for 2023 due to forecasted heavy rains.

"Unfortunately, this year’s Basilone Parade needs to be cancelled due to the weather forecast. The committee will meet in a few days to discuss a 'possible' alternate date for this year. Our apologies for any inconvenience that this may have caused," said Bruce Doorly of the John Basilone Parade Committee.

The parade had been set for Sunday, Sept. 24 with special guest actress Loretta Swit.

This weekend, New Jersey is expected to be hit with widespread flooding from heavy rain, damaging wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour, and even the chance of an isolated tornado.

Between two and three inches of rain are forecast for the entire state.

Saturday: Rain, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m. High near 62. Breezy, with a northeast wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three-quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 56. Breezy, with a northeast wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 66. Northeast wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts between three-quarters and one inch possible.

Sunday Night: Showers likely, mainly before 2 a.m. Cloudy, with a low around 57. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
