Since mid-May, Life Time has fully or partially reopened nearly 130 clubs in 25 states and, as of early August, has recorded more than 7.7 million visits, with reports of fewer than 400 (or .005%) members and employees who have tested positive for COVID-19. Additionally, health and fitness clubs, unlike most other businesses, have a built-in capability for contact tracing with members who check in with every visit and adhere to the safety protocols and cleaning expectations, unlike the less frequent visits by customers to other businesses.
Life Time has created expanded protocols for every area and program to set a new standard for cleaning and building member trust, including a substantial playbook for team members. In developing its COVID-related protocols, Life Time enlisted a former state epidemiologist (M.D. and Ph.D.) with a wide range of experiences in clinical occupational and environment medicine to ensure that its protocols fairly satisfy the latest public health considerations.
Once open, Life Time plans include the following:
- Enhanced cleaning regularly throughout the club, and overnight deep cleaning, using an EPA-registered, hospital-grade disinfectant and virucide that is known to be effective against emerging viral pathogens and human coronavirus, including the virus that causes COVID-19.
- Cleaning stations with disinfectants (in both wipes and spray bottles) throughout the club for members to use before and after exercising on equipment.
- Mandatory mask-wearing by members and team members.
- Adjustments to HVAC systems through altered ventilation rates in smaller spaces, increased outside air, and increased duration of air circulation.
- Social distancing measures throughout the club including markings or directions at the front desk, fitness floor, class studios, locker rooms, children’s areas, pool areas and more.
- Dedicated equipment for class participants that is cleaned between classes, to promote single use.
- Temperature screening for all members and team members consistent with governmental orders and guidelines.
- In-club and online seminars, programs and education focused on exercise and nutrition
In order to serve its community wherever they may be, Life Time has expanded its mobile app to serve everyone, including non-members, with workouts, training and nutrition content and will continue to host complimentary on-demand classes on its website and YouTube channel, adding new content each week. Launching soon, Life Time will debut live streamed classes—a first for the company. These offerings will be available online and be an addition to the existing on-demand content, which now includes more than 100 classes. Nearly 2 million workouts have been completed virtually since the clubs’ closures on March 16. Additionally, to accommodate a wider range of members and meet them at their respective comfort levels, Life Time locations nationwide have turned to a hybrid model, adding outdoor group fitness classes throughout the day.
To date, nearly 130 of Life Time’s 150 clubs across the country have reopened in some capacity, starting with Oklahoma City on May 8. Reopening dates for remaining Life Time clubs, once determined, are announced to members via the company’s website, social channels and direct emails.
