Managing Social Behavior Associated with ADHD - Workshop

SOMERVILLE – Somerset County Freeholder Robert Zaborowski announced that the county Office of Youth Services will be presenting a Community Connections workshop about managing social behaviors associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on Thursday, April 3.

The workshop will be held from 7-9 p.m. in the first floor conference room at the Somerset County Human Services Building, located at 27 Warren Street. The fee for the program is $5, which includes light refreshments. The presentation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Registration starts at 6:30 p.m.

Youth with ADHD commonly present with significant difficulties, which may include sustaining attention, sitting still, controlling their impulses, socializing with peers, regulating emotions and controlling their behavior.

Dr. Michael Selbst, director of Behavior Therapy Associates, will discuss the types of social behavior challenges associated with ADHD.  He also will review practical, evidence-based interventions that can be used to proactively minimize challenging behaviors or to more effectively intervene when problems occur.

A licensed Psychologist and Certified School Psychologist, Dr. Selbst has extensive experience working with children and adults, specializing in individuals who have autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, learning disabilities, significant social-emotional and behavior issues. He is cofounder and executive director of the HI-STEP® Summer Social Skills Program, an intensive six-week day program to help children improve social and problem-solving skills.  He also serves as executive director of the Weekend for Improving Social Effectiveness (WISE).

All proceeds from the workshop will benefit Friends of Somerset County Youth, which is a non-profit organization established to help address unmet needs of youth by providing resources to existing and emerging youth service organizations.
