New Police Chief John Mitzak Takes Charge In Bridgewater

John Mitzak serves as the 8th chief to serve in the Bridgewater Township Police Department history.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — John Mitzak was officially sworn in as the new police chief to lead the Bridgewater Police Department on Thursday night.

"I am humbled and honored to become the 8th police chief in the Bridgewater Township Police Department history," said Mitzak.

The Bridgewater Mayor and Council officially appointed Mitzak, who had been serving as Acting Chief since Paul Payne's retirement, at the Monday night meeting. A special ceremony was held at the municipal complex on Thursday to swear-in Mitzak.

"When everything is at its worst it's you that all those [officers] are going to turn to ... you are the one they will look to give direction, guidance, and strength," said Mayor Matthew Moench at the ceremony. "I am very confident in your ability to lead our department and protect the safety of our town for years to come."

Mitzak has served on the township police department over the past 25 years.

"I have known John for 20 of his 25 years. It is a blessing for this township for him to take this position. On behalf of the 45,000 residents, we appreciate the work that you and the rest of the folks in the police department do on our behalf - going out there every day protecting us," said Councilman Howard Norgalis.

Mitzak noted that he had the opportunity to work for 6 of the township's 7 former police chiefs who he learned a lot.

Mizak thanked his fellow officers, family and friends in an emotional speech. He also said it was "important for the residents in this town to know who their new chief is."

Mitzak said is a husband, father, son, brother, son-in-law, and grandson. He enjoys coaching football and is a die-hard New York Giants fan. He loves reading books - auto biographies. Loves country and rock music.

"I am a 25 year career police officer in this township and I am proud to say I am a Bridgewater Police Officer," said Mitzak.

"I have never been the smartest or the best in the room but I am relentless in anything I put my heart into. And my heart is with the Bridgewater Township Police Department," said Mitzak.

His speech ended with a standing ovation.
