NEW JERSEY — Almost all New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC) in-person transactions are now available by appointment. The additional transactions available were added to improve service at the 39 state agencies.

Customers are now able to schedule appointments starting Monday for the following in-person transactions:

  • New driver permits
  • Non-driver IDs
  • Commercial Learner Permits (CLPs) and endorsements, under a separate appointment category

Additionally, two changes will also take effect on Monday:

  • Name changes and/or gender marker changes may be completed in conjunction with a REAL ID or License Renewal appointment. Otherwise, name changes and/or gender marker changes remain available on a walk-in basis.
  • Probationary licenses will be available via an open appointment: following a successful road test, applicants have 60 days to get their license at any Licensing Center.

MVC sites across the state have been plagued with long lines and sudden closures since reopening to the public last July amid the coronavirus pandemic. The sites had been slammed with a backlog of residents waiting for service to resume.

As a result, online transactions were expanded and then in-person appointments were steadily added since last October.

"Appointments are now widely available for nearly all in-person transactions, and the MVC has added to the total number of appointments in recent weeks," said MVC Chief Administrator Sue Fulton.

All MVC appointments can be scheduled up to two months in advance at NJMVC.gov. Other transactions available by appointment include out-of-state transfers; license or non-driver ID renewals ineligible for online renewal; CDL renewals; REAL ID; new titles or registrations (for individuals only); duplicate or replacement titles; and registration renewals ineligible for online renewal.

Coronavirus Closures

Several MVC sites still remain closed because an employee tested positive for COVID-19 at each location. The following MVC Centers will reopen after full COVID-19 cleaning and the completion of staff quarantine. Here are when they are scheduled to reopen:

  • Wallington Vehicle Center - Saturday
  • Delanco Licensing Center - Saturday
  • Rahway Licensing Center - Thursday, March 11
  • Cherry Hill Vehicle Center - Thursday, March 11
  • West Deptford Regional/Licensing Center - Friday, March 12

MVC Online

Although some centers may be closed, nearly 30 MVC services and transactions can be completed online at NJMVC.gov.

Over the past two months, about 85 percent of standard license renewals and 95 percent of vehicle registration renewals were completed without visiting an MVC site.

Appointment Cancellations

If you can not make a scheduled appointment, cancel it through your confirmation email sent by the MVC upon booking.

If an MVC site is closed due to COVID-19, residents with appointments will be emailed of the cancelation and need to reschedule online.
