O’Sullivan Shines But Patriots Fall In Pitchers’ Duel

The Somerset Patriots (16-24, 58-52) dropped Friday's series-opener 2-1 to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (20-20, 45-64).

Bridgewater, New Jersey - The Somerset Patriots (16-24, 58-52) dropped Friday’s series-opener 2-1 to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (20-20, 45-64) at TD Bank Ballpark.

The game featured strong, scoreless starting pitching from both side through the first four innings. The Blue Crabs opened the scoring in the top of the fifth on a Jon Griffin (6) solo home run to straight-away center field.

Somerset responded immediately on a Rey Navarro (4) solo home run over the right field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning. That briefly tied the ballgame at 1-1.

Southern Maryland got the run back in the next half inning to regain the lead. Edwin Garcia drew a walk to begin the inning before he later advanced to third base and scored on a fielding error from Patriots’ first-baseman Will Kengor.

Both teams, despite chances, would go scoreless the rest of the way.

Daryl Thompson (W, 14-7) allowed one run over seven innings to earn the win. Liam O’Sullivan (L, 5-8) yielded two runs (one earned) over seven innings to take the tough-luck loss. Mat Latos (S, 20) worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth to earn the save.

Southpaw David Holmberg (1-4, 5.27 ERA) takes the mound for the Patriots tomorrow night against Blue Crabs righty John Hayes (2-5, 4.19 ERA).
