Opposition to Sidewalks Based on Monetary and Usage Concerns
Residents speak out about a proposal for sidewalks near the Torpey Athletic Complex.

Residents have expressed their opposition to a proposal for sidewalks by the Torpey Athletic Complex to be done by the Regional Center Partnership—and much of it has to do with money.
“I have expressed my opposition to it because I think it’s costly for the amount of residents who might use it,” said councilman Matthew Moench at the July 7 township council meeting. “It’s not worth the cost of the project.”
Mountainside Lane resident George Jones agreed, saying he is not in favor of putting sidewalks in front of the park.

“The sidewalks were proposed for a very old street, with trees that predate all of us,” he said. “There is a concern that it will bring traffic to a residential area.”
Jones said he knows Mayor Patricia Flannery has questioned the need for those sidewalks, and he recommends another location instead.

“Approximately 300 feet down the road is a clear lane that goes from an extension of Southside Avenue straight to the park,” he said. “I would like the council to explore that option to endorse.”
Moench said there is an old farm near the complex where the sidewalks would be, and older houses butt up to the road.
“It’s an old narrow farm road,” said councilman Allen Kurdyla. “Sidewalks would be up against people’s houses.”
Discussion on the issue is expected at the Regional Center Partnership’s July 20 meeting at 5 p.m. at the administration building on Grove Street in Somerville.
