Man Walking On Tracks Hit, Killed By Train In Somerset County

BOUND BROOK, NJ — A man walking on train tracks in Somerset County was hit and killed by a freight train on Tuesday morning.

The man was reportedly walking within the gauge of the track and hit by a Norfolk Southern train traveling on New Jersey Transit tracks, said Norfolk Southern Spokesman Connor Spielmaker.

The unidentified man was hit around 2:23 a.m. in Bound Brook just west of the Lamont Avenue crossing, said Bound Brook Police Sgt. Jason Gianotto.

The person died. The train only had a conductor and engineer on board at the time who were uninjured.

The person's identity was not immediately available.

"Any loss of life is a tragedy, and our thoughts are with this person's family during this time," said Spielmaker. "We would be remiss if we didn’t say that train tracks can be dangerous and they are not a place to walk along. This is a very unfortunate reminder of that."

The Raritan Valley Line is up to 15 minutes late, as a result, NJ Transit tweeted.
