Registration Open for Therapeutic Recreation Summer Camp

Registration is now open for the Somerset County Park Commission Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Camp Okee Sunokee at the TR Activity Center at Park Commission Headquarters, 355 Milltown Road (at North Branch Park), in Bridgewater, New Jersey.

Camp Okee Sunokee is a six-week day camp for children with learning disabilities, Asperger’s Syndrome, high functioning autism or a mild intellectual disability. The camp has expanded their ages this year and now includes those ages 6-17. The summer activities at Okee Sunokee empower children to improve their self-confidence and self-esteem and encouraged the development of recreation and social skills through the participation in a variety of activities including arts & crafts, sports & games, music, science activities, cooking, trips, and swimming, to name a few.

The camp will begin on Monday, June 24, 2019 and run through Friday, August 2, 2019. Participation is limited to 30 children who will be accepted on a first come-first served basis to both in county and out-of-county residents. Financial aid is available to Somerset County residents.

Therapeutic Recreation is run in partnership with 16 Somerset County municipalities. Programs provide opportunities for any child or adult needing specially designed programs and residing in Bedminster, Bernardsville, Bernards Township, Bound Brook, Branchburg, Bridgewater, Green Brook, Hillsborough, Manville, Montgomery, North Plainfield, Raritan, Somerville, South Bound Brook, Warren, or Watchung to avail themselves of program offerings.

Many campers are in need of assistance to enable them to attend Camp Okee Sunokee. The Somerset County Park Foundation has established a scholarship fund. Donations may be made through the Therapeutic Recreation office.
