Route 22 East In Branchburg, Bridgewater To Be Repaved

The resurfacing project will require overnight and lane closures, beginning on Monday night and continuing for several months.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — A resurfacing project that will require overnight and lanes closures on about 12 miles of Route 22 east in Somerset and Hunterdon counties will begin Monday night and continue for several months, New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials announced.

The work will begin at 8 p.m. on Nov. 5 continue until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, then continue for several months with temporarily closures to shoulders, lanes and ramps along Route 22 eastbound between I-78 eastbound in Clinton and Easton Turnpike/Route 28 in Bridgewater.

The project includes resurfacing and rehabilitating the pavement on Route 22 eastbound, as well as upgrading the intersection traffic signals and curb ramps for ADA compliance.

All travel lanes will remain open during non-work hours. At least one lane will remain open at all times except in areas where only one lane is available on Route 22 eastbound, in that case alternating traffic on Route 22 westbound will be required.

Construction will begin by installing signs along Route 22 eastbound prior to starting left and right lane closures and full ramp closures with detours. The majority of the resurfacing will only require short-term closures during off-peak hours in order to minimize the impact on traffic.

The majority of the pavement preservation work will occur on the following schedule:

Route 22 eastbound lane closures:

  • Weekdays - single lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Saturdays – single lane closures from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.
  • Sundays – single lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The following six Route 22 eastbound intersections will receive upgrades:

  • Exxon Access Road
  • Petticoat Lane
  • Cokesbury Road
  • Merch Drive-Van Horn Road
  • Oldwick Road, CR 523
  • Main Street

Any ramp closures when necessary will take place overnight with the lane closure schedule above. Two consecutive ramps will not be closed simultaneously, to help accommodate detours.

The traffic detours will be coordinated with state police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly. NJDOT will provide advanced notification before any changes in the lane or ramp closure schedule.

The $12.6 million federally-funded Route 22 eastbound paving project is expected to be completed in late 2019.
