Severe Thunderstorm Warning Extended In Somerset County

A severe thunderstorm watch is also issued for the entire county. Storms producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail are possible.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was extended in Somerset County on Tuesday by the National Weather Service(NWS).

The warning is issued for Somerset County through 3 p.m.

At 2:07 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Belle Mead, or 7 miles southwest of Somerville, moving east at 25 mph, according to the NWS.

The storm could produce 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail.

"Minor damage to vehicles is possible," the weather service said. "Wind damage to roofs, siding, trees, and power lines is possible."

A watch remains in effect for the entire county through 8 p.m. A watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in or near the area. A warning means that severe thunderstorms are imminent or occurring in the warned area.

Here is a look at the forecast for the rest of the week:

Tuesday Afternoon: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 86. West wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three-quarters of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m., then a slight chance of showers between 1 and 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 90. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 70. South wind around 5 mph.

Thursday: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 95. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Thursday Night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 72. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 95.
