Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued For Somerset County

A severe thunderstorm moving was detected near the area that could bring 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Somerset County as a storm with 60 mph wind gusts and hail is approaching the area.

The National Weather Service(NWS) in Mount Holly issued the severe thunderstorm warning through 3:45 p.m. on Friday.

Just before 3 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Allentown, or 8 miles east of Trenton, that could bring 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail.

"Minor damage to vehicles is possible. Wind damage to roofs, siding, trees, and power lines is possible," according to NWS.

The NWS and Somerset County Public Safety shared the warning with the following instructions:

"For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. In addition to large hail and damaging winds, frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways."

Friday Afternoon: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. Mostly sunny, with a high near 91. Southwest wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday Night: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 68. East wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 86. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 9 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. High near 83. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 3 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3am. Low around 67. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
